Dawes deal done, say AFL's Magpies

SYDNEY (AAP) - Oct 11 - Collingwood have confirmed key forward Chris Dawes will this week sign a deal to keep him with the Magpies, as AFL clubs made slow progress on prospective trades on Tuesday.
While rival clubs had been interested in the 23-year-old premiership forward, Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh said Dawes had already agreed to terms on a new contract.
"Chris and his management are signing the deal this week and it's been agreed for a week," Walsh told the AFL website.
"It's just some minor little details that had to be worked out in relation to yesterday's announcement with the CBA (collective bargaining agreement.
"That's done now and we'll lodge the details in a timely fashion."
Dawes was a key member of the Magpies' 2010 premiership side, although was less influential in this year's finals campaign, after missing seven games with a knuckle injury late in the year.
While Dawes is staying, the manager of Alan Toovey said the Magpies defender will be at a new club next season unless Collingwood can find extra salary cap room by off-loading another player.
Jim Marinis said Collingwood had told the backman they had no room to move on his salary, which Marinis added was below "market value".
Marinis, who took the unusual step of emailing every other club to tell them Toovey is on the hunt for a better deal, said eight clubs had expressed interest.
He said the hard-working defender was happy to move interstate to get the contract he wanted.
Marinis said the "door is not completely closed" on Toovey staying with Collingwood, but the Magpies could not satisfy his pay requirements unless another player left.
"That's the only way they can do the deal, unfortunately. That's the position Collingwood are in at the moment," he said.
Complicating Toovey's position, the AFL players' association has warned clubs that Marinis is not an accredited agent, so can not sign off on an AFL contract.
However, that does not prevent him negotiating on the player's behalf and having another agent, who is accredited, sign the deal.
No trades were completed on Tuesday, with speculation a mooted four-way deal involving new team Greater Western Sydney, Hawthorn, Adelaide and Fremantle was proving a stumbling block.
The deal, if it eventuated, would reportedly help Crows forward Jack Gunston get his wish to join Hawthorn, while helping the Giants draft exciting 17-year-old West Australian Jaeger O'Meara.
O'Meara is expected to be the No.1 pick in next Monday's mini-draft - of 17-year-olds who would not otherwise be in the national draft until next year - for which the Giants can trade up to four selections.
The Giants must trade out those picks, rather than use them, but are understood to be exploring a potential loophole, by which they can then regain one of them to snare O'Meara.
Meanwhile, Geelong dual premiership veteran Darren Milburn confirmed his retirement on Tuesday, joining captain Cameron Ling and forward Cameron Mooney.
