Iranian, Turkish films lead nominees in APSA 2011

TEHRAN, Oct.12(MNA) -- Iran’s “Nader and Simin, A Separation” and Turkey’s “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia,” both Oscar entrants, lead the nominees at APSA ( Asia Pacific Film Academy ) 2011 this year.

The two films stand on top with four nominations each, the Asia Pacific Film Academy website announced on Monday.

“Nader and Simin” directed and produced by Asghar Farhadi has been nominated for best feature film, achievement in directing, best actor (Peyman Mo’adi) and best screenplay (Asghar Farhadi).

“Once Upon a Time in Anatolia”, written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, has also been nominated for best feature film, achievement in directing, achievement in cinematography and best screenplay.

A portrayal of the break-up of a marriage, “Nader and Simin” won a Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin film festival and its cast ensemble received best actor and actress Silver Bears at the event.

Featuring a group of men setting out in search of a dead body in the Anatolian steppes, “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” shared the Grand Prix with Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for “The Kid with a Bike”.

Farhadi’s “About Elly” grabbed two prizes at the third annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in 2009, containing the Jury Grand Prize and Best Screenplay Award.

37 films from 19 countries have been nominated in this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards, out of which five are selected from Iranian cinema.

“Goodbye” by Mohammad Rasulof is seen among the nominees for the best feature film. Achievement in directing and best performance by an actress (Leyla Zare) are also included in the movie’s other nominations.

Rasulof received the award for Best Director in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for his “Goodbye”.

Other Iranian nominees include actress Shayesteh Irani “Facing Mirrors” for best actress award, “Wind and Fog” (Naser Dehqani-Pudeh) for the best children’s feature film award, and “Amin” (Shahin Parhami) for best documentary feature film.

Winners in the Fifth Annual APSA will be determined by an International Jury headed by leading Hong Kong film producer Nansun Shi. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on November 24.
