MAF PREPARED TO CHANNEL AID FROM DONORS TO AFGHANS

SUBANG (Bernama) - The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) are prepared to be the go-between for individuals, the corporate sector and non-governmental organisations wishing to provide aid to the people of Afghanistan.

MAF chief Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zain said contributions in the form of cash, food supply, medicines and other necessities could be channelled through the MAF.

"We welcome contributions, especially cash, to provide the Afghans with clean water supply in our area of operation, Bamiyan," he said after the sending-off of the Malcon ISAF 3 team to Afghanistan from the Royal Malaysian Air Force base, here, on Thursday.

Also present were Joint Forces Command chief Vice-Admiral Ahmad
Kamarulzaman Badaruddin and MAF Health Services director-general Lt Gen Dr Abdul Razak Md Yusoff.

On assisting flood victims in Thailand, Zulkifeli said the MAF were prepared to mobilise their logistics if there was a request from the Thai government.

In his speech earlier, he said although the task of the Malcon ISAF 3 focused on providing humanitarian aid and would not be directly involved in military operations, the safety aspect must not be taken lightly.

"Every officer and member must give priority to safety and ensure that it is at a high level at all times," he said.

The eight officers and 27 members of Malcon ISAF 3 led by deputy commander, Maj Mohd Zubir Sulaiman, will take over duty from Malcon ISAF 2 which has been on a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan for almost six months since April 6.
