US AMBASSADOR LAUDS MALAYSIA'S ANTI-MIGRANT SMUGGLING EFFORTS

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - United States ambassador to Malaysia Paul W. Jones lauds Malaysia's efforts in combating human smuggling and trafficking.

Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said Jones described the 3P programme (prosecution, prevention and protection) of the Malaysian government as being very effective and should be an example to other countries.

Mahmood said Jones made the compliment when attending the Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Migrant Smuggling Meeting (MAPO) on Thursday in Putrajaya chaired by him.

"The presence of Jones and his delegation at the meeting was to provide views on the issue of anti-human trafficking and anti-migrant smuggling in the country," said Mahmood in a statement on Thursday.

He said Jones also praised the efforts and cooperation between the
Malaysian government and non-governmental organisations in tackling the problem and proposed that Malaysia set up a protection centre completely operated by NGOs which had been implemented successfully in several countries.

He said at the meeting, the representative of the Royal Malaysian Police disclosed that there were 281 migrants smuggled since 2008 to Oct 24 this year involving 109 women and 172 men.

They comprised Indonesians (127), Filipinos (61), Myanmars (57), Afghans (six), Pakistanis (eight), Sri Lankans (six) and Bangladeshis (16).

Mahmood said the MAPO members present at the meeting included officers from police, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, Attorney-General's Chambers, Human Resources Ministry and Immigration Department.

Also present were officers from the Information, Communications and
Culture Ministry, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, National Council of Women's Organisations, Coalition to Abolish Modern-day Slavery in Asia and the Children's Welfare Council.
