Govt Mulls Over Proposal To Create Special Lane At Malaysia-Brunei Border

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The government will study a proposal to set up a special lane at the Malaysia-Brunei border to facilitate the entry and exit of cars registered in both countries, the Lower House of Parliament was told Wednesday. Deputy Home Minister Lee Chee Leong said the study would be conducted based on the infrastructural facilities of both countries and agreement from Brunei. "Meanwhile, requests to stamp passports once a month (for Malaysians passing through the Malaysia-Brunei border) also depends on an agreement from Brunei. "So far, the issue is only advertised through local dailies in Sarawak," he said in response to a question from Hasbi Habibollah. Hasbi wanted to know when the government would begin implementing the monthly passport stamping for Malaysians who frequently traversed the Malaysia-Brunei border. Lee said currently, the Frequent Traveller Facility (FTF) was given to Malaysians who frequently travelled to Brunei via the border. "This facility expedites the immigration inspection process at entry points of both countries, and with this facility, FTF users need only obtain passport verification, once every three months." He said this was because, verification and entry or exit activities were recorded electronically, using biometric fingerprints which did not require them to fill out disembarkation forms. "This facility can only be used at entry points in Pandaruan, Tedungan and Sungai Tujuh," he added. -- BERNAMA
