Myanmar President Opens 11th Telmin

From Noor Farhana Ahmad Norain NAY PYI TAW (Myanmar), Dec 8 (Bernama) -- Myanmar President Thein Sein has declared open the 11th Asean Telecommunication and Information Technology Ministers' Meeting (Telmin) here Thursday. Prior to the opening ceremony at the Myanmar International Convention Centre, the 10 Asean telecommunication ministers and Asean secretary-general, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, who is also Asean Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Centre director, made a courtesy call on the president. Malaysian Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim, the outgoing Telmin chairman, delivered the opening remarks. Myanmar Communication, Posts and Telegraphs Minister,Thein Tun, the newly-elected chairman, would preside at three sessions Thursday. Today's programme would end with a gala dinner at the same venue. The Telmin was preceded by a three-day 12th Asean Telecommunications and Information Technology Senior Officials Meeting, which ended Wednesday and attended by the regional grouping's dialogue partners. The meeting, themed "ICT: Engine for Growth in Asean" is aimed at utilising ICT to spur the regional economic and social growth and forging stronger ties among the regional telecommunications fraternity. Asean comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. -- BERNAMA
