World's first skyscrapers
SANAA (A.A) - January 2, 2012 - The world's oldest skyscrapers, part of the world cultural heritage, continue to dazzle individuals who look at them in Yemen.
Yemen hosts the world's first skyscrapers that were built by mud and in which people still live after centuries.
Yemen is a country in which the Ad tribe is known with their high rise buildings in holy books.
Historical records indicate that the first skyscrapers were built by the Hadramites who lived in northern Yemen and who wanted to defend themselves against attacks coming from the desert region.
The skyscrapers made out of mud and adobe bricks continue to stand still after centuries.
-They are unique in world-
One of the best samples of the world's first skyscrapers is in Yemen's capital of Sanaa that was built around 2,500 years ago.
It is possible to see skyscrapers in Sanaa with 6-7 stories and in Hadramut and Shibam regions with 10-12 stories.
There are around 6,500 historic buildings that were constructed with traditional designs in Sanaa.
These buildings were built so that the residents are protected from cold weather at night and hot weather during day time.
There are minarets that are as tall as 150 meters in the region.
The historic buildings are on UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage.
Thousands of individuals visit Yemen each year to witness the beauty the country has to offer with its unique buildings.
