Moderation The Essence Of Malaysia's Foreign Policy

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Moderation has all along been the essence of Malaysia's foreign policy, and it has proven to be a success element in maintaining good relations between countries. Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said, in conducting its international relations, Malaysia had availed itself to the application of rules, constructive engagement, negotiations, dialogue and extensive discussions, describing them as tools of moderation. "I believe that these have been tried and tested and successful over the years," he said, during a luncheon hosted for 350 delegates attending the inaugural International Conference on Global Movement of Moderates (ICGMM) here on Tuesday. As a multiracial country, Malaysia had concrete foundation in practising tolerance, he said, adding that he believed this was a crucial value in relations among countries. "We can't expect others to be tolerant and accepting if we don't do the same for others," Anifah said. Anifah reckoned that support for the global movement of moderates mooted by Prime Minister Najib Razak had been growing. The foreign minister said the world had to unite to counter extremist ideologies from being translated into violent acts, and it could be done by preaching and practising moderation. "By standing united, the symphony of our voices will not only be heard, but it'll drown the cacophony of the extremists," he added. The ICGMM was opened by Najib. -- BERNAMA Malaysia
