Japan Cop To Lead Interpol’s Regional Centre In Singapore

NEW DELHI, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Interpol has picked a Japan top cop to lead its regional super-facility based in Singapore to stem rising deadly cross-border crimes from trafficking of narcotics, humans to wildlife. Interpol, which has its headquarters in France, appointed Noboru Nakatani as the executive director to spearhead its world's third research and development facility. The other two centres are in Lyon, France, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Interpol's state-of-the-art Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) facility, expected to be operational in 2014, would serve some 190 member states. "All member countries and Interpol will benefit from his vision and cutting-edge approach to developing responses to emerging threats," Ronald K. Noble, Interpol's secretary-general, said in a statement. Currently, Nakatani is the special advisor to the Commissioner General of Japan's National Police Agency (NPA) and director of NPA's Transnational Organised Crime Office. "Japan has allowed Nakatani to return to Interpol to take up this challenging and historic post. It reaffirms Japan's strong commitment to Interpol and to international police cooperation," said Khoo Boon Hui, Interpol's president, a Singaporean. Nakatani, an expert in money laundering and cyber crime, would take up the three-year post in April. -- BERNAMA
