Former All-England Champion Downs World Number One Player, Chong Wei In Thomas Cup Simulation

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Former All-England champion Muhammad Hafiz Hashim defeated World Number One men's singles player Datuk Lee Chong Wei in a Thomas Cup simulation test held Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara here Wednesday. Hafiz downed Chong Wei in straight sets of 21-10, 23-21. "I did not expect to beat him, Chong Wei was also not at his very best today. Nevertheless, the simulation was good for us and very timely," he told reporters afterwards. Meanwhile, national singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said he was satisfied with the performance shown by Hafiz today and hoped Malaysia's Thomas Cup mission would be a success. "Liew Daren and Mohd Arif Latif (the other singles players in the Thomas Cup squad) also put up good performances. We are optimistic of making to the final round, the players are raring to go," he said. Malaysia wil be playing in the Thomas Cup qualifying round in Macau from Feb 14 to 19.
