S'pore, EC Sign Pacts To Boost Bilateral Ties In Transport Sector

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah SINGAPORE, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- The European Commission (EC) and Singapore have signed three agreements to enhance bilateral relations in the transport sector. Vice-president of the EC and Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas and Singapore Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lui Tuck Yew, signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of intelligent transport systems. Another MoU was between the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on aviation safety cooperation. The third was the signing of a letter of intent between the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research Joint Undertaking and the CAAS to explore ways to cooperate on air traffic management issues. Kallas, who is visiting Singapore under the Singapore Ministry of Transport’s Distinguished Visitors’ Programme, said Europe already enjoyed many strong connections with this region. "We can all gain from working together, and by making best use of Europe's investment, its specialised technical expertise, skill in innovation and transport manufacturing capability," he said. Meanwhile, Yew said the signing of the agreements showed that there was greater scope for cooperation in the transport sector between the EC and Singapore. -- BERNAMA
