World Press Photo Exhibition 11 Now Opens In Melaka

MELAKA (Malacca, Malaysia), Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The World Press Photo Exhibition 11 which is the world's largest and most anticipated travelling photo exhibition that displays work of 55 photographers is now open to the public for free from Wednesday, Feb 15 until Feb 23, at Balai Seni Lukis, here. The exhibition, opened by Chief Minister of Melaka, Mohd Ali Rustam and jointly organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands, TNT Express Malaysia and supported by the Melaka Museum Corporation is expected to attract thousands of visitors. Speaking at the launch, Netherlands ambassador to Malaysia, Paul Bekkers said press photography plays an important role in creating awareness about global issues such as climate change, war and famine. "In this exhibition, you will be able to see a handful of themes from the earthquake in Haiti to the colourful women wrestlers in Bolivia. "The breadth of topics covered in the exhibition is a perfect reflection of how important art and culture is in fostering ties between nations," he said. Sponsored by TNT Express Malaysia for the second time in a row, the exhibition was a result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography. This year's competition attracted 5,691 photographers from 125 countries including Malaysia and, in total, a record number of 108,059 images were entered in the contest. The photos are categorised into nine themes - portrait, people in the news, general news, spot news, contemporary issues, daily life, nature, arts and entertainment, as well as sports. The exhibition will move on to its two final locations at the 1 Borneo Shopping Complex in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (east Malaysia) from Feb 27 to March 8 and at the Penang Town Hall (north Malaysia), from March 11 to 19. --BERNAMA
