Consumer Claims Tribunal M'sia Solves 366 Cases Involving Foreign Tourists Since 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Consumer Claims Tribunal Malaysia has solved 366 claims filed by foreign tourists who were cheated on the purchase of goods and services in Malaysia since 2008. Malaysian Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said most of the claims involved cheating in price and quality. He said tourists from Singapore made up the highest number of claimants with 102, followed by India (50), Nigeria (40), Iran (33) and Indonesia (21). It's proven through the tribunal that the consumer rights of tourists in Malaysia are well protected and that it is safe to shop in Malaysia, he told reporters during his walkabout to promote the tribunal to tourists around Berjaya Times Squre here Thursday. The minister said the tribunal was a very useful and simple mechanism for foreign claimants, even if they were in Malaysia for only a short visit. "If they are here for just a day, they can still file the claim and leave it to be taken care of the ministry until it is solved even without their presence at the tribunal. "Once solved, the ministry will inform the result of the claim to the claimant," Ismail Sabri said, adding that claim can be filed online or by filing up the claim form at the tribunal. -- BERNAMA
