Penang Health Dept To Launch Programme To Reduce Obesity

GEORGE TOWN (Malaysia), Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The Penang Health Department has urged people with obesity problem to register with the department starting Sunday. State Health Department Deputy Director Dr Norlia Yahya said the one year pilot programme was initiated to create awareness among obese people since obesity has become a major health concern. "Those who register under the programme will go three phases throughout the year, namely health screening, theory and physical activities before their progress is gauged," she told reporters after launching the programme at the Rukun Tetangga (Community/Neighbour Association) Complex in Jalan Kedah Sunday. Dr Norlia said at the initial stage, the programme would be handled by a Health Advisory Penal from Jalan Macalister Health Clinic and serve the people of Timur Laut. "The programme will be extended to other parts of the state if the response was good," she said. She added that a mini clinic would be opened at selected community centres every Saturday with activities like aerobics, taichi, talk, exhibition, demonstrations, healthy lifestyle tips and sports activities. Penang is located in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. -- BERNAMA
