Hundreds Of Peace Activists Detained In Storming Of NATO HQ

Berlin, April 2, IRNA - More than 480 European peace activists protesting NATO warmongering policies were detained on Sunday outside the western military alliance's headquarters in Brussels, the Belga news agency reported. Code-named 'NATO Game Over,' the peace activists tried to symbolically storm the NATO compound in a bid to shut it down ahead of next month's NATO summit in Chicago. According to police, no anti-NATO protester was able to do enter the heavily guarded compound. 'This is an act of civil disobedience. We are committing a small offence to avoid a bigger one,' Roel Stynen of the organization Vredesactie told Belga. Stynen accused NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen of wanting to transform the pact into 'a military intervention apparatus,' referring to its highly controversial military operations in Afghanistan and Libya. Activists also lambasted NATO plans for a European missile shield, saying it would 'relaunch the global arms race.'/end
