UAE delegation meets President of Afghanistan

Abu Dhabi, Oct 14, 2008 (WAM) - In keeping with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Under Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court, headed a high level official delegation on a visit to Afghanistan.

The delegation members held talks with the Afghani officials which focused on the country's urgent needs in terms of basic services and development projects to be carried out as part of a US$ 250 million aid pledged by the UAE during the international donors' conference for re-construction of Afghanistan, held in Paris.

The delegation members were received by President Hamed Karzai of Afghanistan. During the meeting, Al Mazrouei conveyed to the Afghanistan leader the greetings of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The meeting also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and the UAE's efforts in the reconstruction and development projects in Afghanistan.

President Karzai expressed gratitude and appreciation to Sheikh Khalifa's unlimited support to the people of Afghanistan.
The delegation members also held a meeting with the Afghani officials. The UAE side was headed by Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei and included Dr Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Development Fund, and representatives of energy, agriculture and construction sectors.

The meeting focused n studying proposals submitted by the Afghanistan government on the use of the grant amount in accordance with the needs of vital development programmes in the fields of agriculture, housing, water and energy.

The Abu Dhabi Development Fund implemented in 1977 an Dh 16.8 million sugar factory project in Afghanistan. It is currently executing three projects in Kabul at a total value of USD 30 million.
