S. Korea rout UAE 4-1 to fire up World Cup hopes
SEOUL, Oct. 15 (Yonhap) -- High-flying Lee Keun-ho blasted two goals to help thrust South Korea 4-1 past the Unitd Arab Emirates at home in an Asian qualifier for the 2010 World Cup on Wednesday.
Lee, who scored a pair of goals in a friendly against Uzbekistan at the weekend,
drove into the penalty area in the 20th minute and rifled the ball into the net
past onrushing UAE goalie Majed Naser.
Five minutes later, Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung picked up the ball
rolling off UAE defender Basheer Saeed and turned around to rush deep into the
area to fire it into the upper right corner of the net past leaping Naser.
UAE striker Ismail Salem tried to torch a rally in the 61st minute when he
capitalized on a botched dribble by South Korean defender Cho Yong-hyung, but his
team failed to score further.
Lee, 23, extended South Korea's lead in the 80th minute when he rolled into the
area with the ball passed from behind by Park and smashed it into the opposite
corner of the UAE net.
Defender Kwak Tae-hwi helped clinched the win just two minutes before the end of
regular time, leaping over a UAE defender to power in a header past a standing
Naser.
The win at Seoul World Cup Stadium put South Korea firmly back in contention for
a ticket to the World Cup finals in Asian Group 2, bestowing three points on
them.
South Korea now have four points, having won one of them after they fought a
disappointing 1-1 draw with North Korea last month in the opener of the final
Asian qualifying round.
Ten Asian teams are competing in two groups in the final qualifying, where South
Korea are also grouped with Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Park, 27, overwhelmed the UAE defenders with a high-octane drive across the field
as he skippered the South Korean squad, whose morale had been largely hurt after
the draw against North Korea.
Having scored two goals in the previous Asian qualifying round, Park was much
aided by veteran midfielder Lee Young-pyo, who moved to Germany's top-tier league
from the Premier League in August and orchestrated South Korea's defense on
Wednesday.
