-TURKEY WELCOMES DIPLOMATIC STEPS BETWEEN SYRIA AND LEBANON

ANKARA (A.A) - 16.10.2008 - Turkey welcomed on Thursday diplomatic steps between Syria and Lebanon, the Foreign Ministry said.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry said that it welcomed establishment of diplomatic relations between Syria and Lebanon, and steps taken to boost relations between these two countries.
"Turkey believes that these steps will contribute to regional peace, tranquility and stability," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also reaffirmed Turkey's determination to back all constructive and positive steps aiming to restore peace, security and stability in the Middle East.
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman paid a formal visit to Syria on August 13-14, and met Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.
In their meeting, the two presidents decided to establish diplomatic relations and appoint ambassadors.
Later, Syria and Lebanon passed decrees to open embassies in each other's territories, and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh signed a joint declaration in Damascus on October 15th to establish diplomatic relations.
The joint declaration said that two countries aimed to enhance their relations on the basis of mutual respect for each country's sovereignty and independence.
