Korea fourth largest spam mail producer: report

SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea was the fourth largest source of spam mail that was distributed around the world last month, an industry report showed Thursday.

A monthly report from Symantec Corp., a U.S. publisher of anti-virus software,
said that 4 percent of all spam mail in the world in September originated from
South Korea, without giving actual numbers. The nation's ranking jumped six
notches from the previous month.
The United States came first, as the origin for 29 percent of all spam mail,
followed by Turkey and Russia with 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively.
Most of the contents were of Internet and computer-related material, with 24
percent, followed by real estate investment and bank loans contents with 20
percent of all global spam mails.
South Korea had the largest growth rate in the number of 'zombie' computers,
expanding 4,236 percent from the previous month, the report said. Zombie
computers refers to Internet-attached computers that have been hacked to serve as
decoy routers for spam mail distribution.
