S. Korea to host 2010 IAEA fusion energy conference By Lee Joon-seung

SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is to host the 23rd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference that aims to promote sharing of knowhow and data related to the cutting-edge energy technology, the government said Sunday.

The seven-day-long event that will be held in October 2010 will gather 1,000
scientists and government officials from 40 countries engaged in the research and
development (R&D) of fusion power, the Ministry of Education, Science and
technology said.
Senior officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and
International Energy Agency will attend the event that is considered to be the
Olympics of the fusion energy field. The city of Daejeon, located 164 kilometers
south of Seoul and home to many leading South Korean R&D centers, will host the
biannual event.
Fusion power is a futuristic technology involving the creation of an environment
where a super-hot plasma field can be maintained for long periods of time. Once
this state is reached, it can be fueled by naturally abundant deuterium and
tritium, which allows a fusion reaction that can effectively create an artificial
sun.
South Korea -- along with the European Union (EU), Japan, Russia, the United
States, China and India -- is currently engaged in the International
Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project that calls for building a full-scale
demonstration fusion power plant by the mid-2030s, and a commercial version
capable of generating at least 1,000 megawatts of electricity by the 2040s.
"South Korea's hosting of the international gathering is significant since it can
showcase some of the breakthroughs made in this field that can raise its status
vis-a-vis leaders like the United States and Japan," said a ministry official.
In July, the government said that a stable plasma field has been generated on an
indigenous fusion energy test bed called Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced
Research (KSTAR), which can help generate unlimited clean energy.
The first fusion energy conference was held in Salzburg, with this year's
gathering being held in Vienna.
