Samsung's heir apparent reassigned to China, source says

SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Yonhap) -- The only son of former Samsung Group chairman Lee
Kun-hee was transferred to China on Monday as part of a shakeup of the group's
management, a source said.
The move comes in the wake of a scandal that led to the stunning resignation of
the senior Lee from the helm of South Korea's biggest business conglomerate.
Lee Jae-yong's reassignment to the Chinese city of Shanghai came less than a week
after the Seoul High Court upheld a lower court's ruling that gave a suspended
prison term to his father on charges of tax evasion.
The junior Lee "recently left for Japan and will soon move to Shanghai, his first
overseas place of work," the source said on the condition of anonymity.
The former Samsung chairman resigned from the post in April after he was indicted
by a special prosecutor on charges of breach of duty and evading more than US$100
million in taxes.
A lower court acquitted the senior Lee of the charge of breach of trust related
to long-simmering allegations that he passed his wealth and the group's
management control to Jae-yong throughout opaque stock transactions at its
affiliates, including Samsung Everland Ltd.
