Lee to separately meet Aso, Sarkozy on sidelines of ASEM in Beijing

By Yoo Cheong-mo
SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak is scheduled to hold bilateral
summit talks with his counterparts of Japan, France, Vietnam, Denmark and Poland
on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit set to take place in
Beijing, China, later this week, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae announced
Tuesday.
"Following his arrival in Beijing on Thursday, Lee will hold his first summit
with Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Friday morning for discussions on closer
cooperation in fighting global financial crisis and other bilateral issues," a
ranking Cheong Wa Dae official said.
Since his inauguration in February, Lee had met with Aso's predecessor, Yasuo
Fukuda, three times until early July, but the two countries' relations have since
chilled due to Japan's provocative claim to South Korean easternmost islets of
Dokdo.
The Lee-Aso meeting is expected to tackle the U.S.-originated global financial
crisis and North Korean nuclear problems instead of the diplomatically sensitive
territorial issues.
Lee and Aso, along with leaders of 43 Asian and European member states, are to
visit Beijing to attend the 7th ASEM summit, which will be held Friday and
Saturday under the theme of finding a win-win solution to pending international
issues. The ASEM summit has been held every two years since 1998, with the second
summit held in Seoul in 2000.
"Host China is pushing to convene a summit of leaders of ASEAN Plus Three
countries, which include China, Japan, Korea and 10 Southeast Asian countries,
over breakfast on Friday for discussion on closer regional cooperation in
stabilizing the Asian financial markets," said the official.
In addition, President Lee will hold a string of summit talks with his
counterparts from Vietnam, Denmark and Poland on Friday to ask for closer two-way
cooperation in infrastructure construction and development of new energy sources.
On Saturday, Lee will also hold a two-way summit with French President Nicolas
Sarkozy to exchange views on how to combat the world financial turmoil and
accelerate free trade deals between Korea and the European Union.
