Samsung SDI swings to black in Q3

SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Yonhap) -- Samsung SDI Co. said Wednesday that it swung back to
the black in the third quarter on increased sales of rechargeable batteries and
cost savings in its display business.
Net profit reached 58.7 billion won (US$43 million) in the July-September period,
compared with a loss of 103 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a
regulatory filing.
Sales increased 30 percent on-year to 1.72 trillion won, and operating income
reached 73.3 billion won, a turnaround from a loss of 118 billion won a year
earlier, it said.
Shares of Samsung SDI were trading at 75,700 won on the Seoul bourse as of 1:49
p.m., down 0.77 percent.
The battery business of Samsung SDI, an affiliate of Samsung Group, is currently
the sole bright spot for the company, whose business portfolio also includes
next-generation organic displays.
Samsung SDI said earlier this year that it plans to shift its focus to
money-making rechargeable batteries from its display-making business, which is
slated to be merged with Samsung Electronics Co.
