Lee set to tackle financial crisis at ASEM summit

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak was to meet
with leaders of 42 other Asian and European member states of the Asia-Europe
Meeting (ASEM) in Beijing on Friday to discuss how to weather the worldwide
financial crisis.
At the opening session of the biennial ASEM summit, slated for late Friday
afternoon, the Asian and European member countries, which account for roughly 60
percent of the world's gross domestic product, will likely agree to deepen policy
cooperation in overcoming the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression
that started in 1929.
The world leaders are also expected to share the view that the world's financial
market systems should undergo drastic structural overhauls, and all countries
across the globe should abstain from protectionist trade policies to minimize the
impact on the real economic sector.
Prior to the ASEM event, Lee, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime
Minister Taro Aso will meet with leaders of 10 Southeast Asian countries over
breakfast Friday in the format of the ASEAN Plus Three summit for discussion on
closer regional cooperation in stabilizing the Asian financial markets.
Lee is also to hold a series of bilateral summit talks with Japanese Prime
Minister Aso, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Danish Prime Minister
Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
In particular, Lee's first meeting with Aso draws diplomatic attention, as the
two leaders are likely to go into details of bilateral cooperation and measures
to fight the global financial crisis.
In the summit with Denmark, Lee was expected to propose closer bilateral
cooperation in the fields of environment-friendly and new renewable energy
resources, while he will ask Vietnamese and Polish leaders for greater
cooperation in various infrastructure construction projects.
On Saturday, Lee will hold a two-way summit with French President Nicolas Sarkozy
and attend more rounds of the ASEM summit before returning home in the evening.
