Thailand develops new rice strains, innovations
BANGKOK, November 20 (TNA) - Thailand is conducting a new research project on the all-out development of rice production in the country, covering new rice strains and relevant innovations.
Rice Department Director-General Chairit Damrongkiat and Naresuan University President Professor Sujin Jinayon on Tuesday inked a 5-year agreement to jointly cooperate on the research project.
The agreement covers the joint development of knowledge on rice, rice production and full-circle rice products, along with the joint development of relevant researchers and personnel and the creation of new innovations and new rice strains which are not sensitive to sunlight and suitable for the lower Thai North, particularly those of high quality with nutrient and permanent pest resistance, namely planthoppers, to meet global demand.
Both high ranking officials said they believe that Thailand has the potential to remain the number one exporter of quality rice in the region, thanks to the Kingdom's long standing knowledge and traditional wisdom on rice, as well as diversified and innovative rice strains and technologies.
Both senior officials suggested, however, that Thailand needs to reduce overall rice production costs to maintain national competitiveness in regional and global markets. (TNA)
