Thailand organizes ASEAN trade workshop

BANGKOK, November 28 (TNA)- The Thai Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday organized a two-day ASEAN trade workshop in Bangkok, scheduled for November 28-29, aimed at strengthening trade competition policies among 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN ahead of the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015. Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of Internal Trade Santichai Santawanpas told journalists that delegations from ASEAN member countries participating in the workshop were also set to certify on preparing a handbook needed for the ASEAN Trade Competition Organisation. Santichai said the participants are also expected to exchange key information on a plan to set up the ASEAN Trade Competition Organisation, on the enforcement of regional trade competition laws and on how to promote trade competition. Santichai acknowledged that so far some ASEAN member nations, including the Philippines, Brunei, Myanmar and Laos, have not yet promulgated trade competition laws to oversee their business sectors, and that it is necessary all the ASEAN members have such laws in the future to draw more investment projects and to help business operators compete fairly. Thailand’s Trade Competition Act has been enforced since 1999. However, concerned officials are reviewing the Act, because it does not cover state-enterprises, although several of them engage in trade and service businesses. (TNA)
