UAE's RCA team starts combating blindness mission
Dar-es-Salam, Oct 26, 2008 (WAM) - A team from the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) arrived in Tanzania to provide medical services and treatment for those who suffer from curable blindness and other eye diseases.
A large number of patients with cataracts, glaucoma, corneal blindness and other eye disorders will be treated and operated on by the experienced team during the one-week programme using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques.
Upon arrival, the team which was received by UAE Ambassador to Tanzania Malullah Mubarak Al Amri and officials from the Tanzanian Health Ministry held a meeting with officials to put the final touches on the one-week programme.
The initiative comes in line with directives from Deputy Prime Minister and President of RCA HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide free treatment for ophthalmic patients in the East African country.
Al Amri said the current visit is in line with the UAE leadership's interest in promoting stronger humanitarian relations with Tanzania as well as in improving the humanitarian situation in the African country.
Head of the team Ahmed Ali said the current mission is a message of peace and love from the UAE people. The team consisting of medics and paramedics will also conduct surgeries when needed to avert chances of blindness, said Dr. Ali Al Ka'abi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RCA.
