UAE calls on UN media to shed light on Palestinian, developing countries' issues
New York – October 26, 2008 (WAM) - The UAE has called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility on providing developing countries with the necessary resources to enable them to use modern technology and have access to knowledge.
"We wish also to seize this opportunity to express our appreciation to the Assistant-Secretary-General for Public Information and the staff of the Department for their distinguished efforts in disseminating the noble values of the United Nations towards maintaining global peace and security", according to the statement of Salem Matar Saif Al Saedi, Member of the UAE Delegation to the 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly before the Fourth Committee on Special Political Questions and Decolonization on questions relating to information.
He added that the UAE wishes this Department and other departments and institutions of the UN to abide by the principles of transparency and impartiality in approaching current international issues, especially those relating to developing countries, climate change and environment, organized crime and terrorism as well as remaining occupation issues such as the Palestinian Question and the situation in the Middle East.
Al Saedi stressed the need for strengthening cooperation and coordination between the Department of Public Information and other UN departments and organs, particularly in the areas of promoting culture of peace and dialogue among civilizations and discouraging violence, religious intolerance and extremism, in order to create affinity and harmony among future generations.

Mr. Chairman, On behalf of the Delegation of the United Arab Emirates, it gives me great pleasure to extend to you, Sir, our sincere congratulations on your election as chairman of this committee and we are sure that you will successfully lead the work of the Committee. We wish also to seize this opportunity to express our appreciation to the Assistant-Secretary-General for Public Information and the staff of the Department for their distinguished efforts in disseminating the noble values of the United Nations towards maintaining global peace and security.
Mr. Chairman, The world recognizes the significant impact of modern technology including audio and visual mass media in broadcasting information and disseminating knowledge for the benefit of all humanity.
The UAE, while it expresses its concern over the widening gap between the peoples of the developed and developing countries in areas of information technology and communications which has led to the marginalization of hundreds of thousands of people, would like to underline the responsibility of the international community towards supporting and providing developing countries with the necessary resources to enable them to use modern technology and have access to knowledge. We also call for developing an international code of ethics that would contribute to setting appropriate legal and moral standards and ensure impartiality, transparency and credibility in the transfer and use of information and in ensuring respect for human rights and religious beliefs and values. In this context, we also wish to express our regret over the persistence of inflammatory actions against other religions and their moral values and we wish to emphasize the importance of protecting media and information staff especially in areas of wars and conflicts, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
Mr. Chairman, My country's delegation, which has always been looking forward to reforming and strengthening the central role played by the United Nations in addressing the growing global threats and problems, especially those relating to the maintenance of peace and security, achievement of development and dissemination of the principles of human rights, would like to stress the importance of strengthening the role played by the Department of Public Information in areas of disseminating the political, economic, development and humanitarian goals and purposes of the United Nations, which in our opinion requires in the first place the continuation of development of human, financial and technical resources of this Department in order to enable it to perform its responsibilities, particularly in the area of providing Arabic language services in order to bring these services up to the same standard as those for the other five official languages of the United Nations including the UN electronic website, the legal documents and press releases, the UN library, the radio and television broadcasting and in other information activities of the UN.
The UAE also wishes to emphasise the need for this Department and other departments and institutions of the UN to be abide by the principles of transparency and impartiality in approaching current international issues, especially those relating to developing countries, climate change and environment, organised crime and terrorism as well as remaining occupation issues such as the Palestinian Question and the situation in the Middle East. This requires the Department of Public Information to promote its programs for uncovering the different aspects of the suffering of Palestinians from the Israeli occupation crimes, which are in violation of international law, the UN Charter, and other relevant UN resolutions.
Mr. Chairman, The UAE has introduced a number of legislations and laws guaranteeing objective, transparent and balanced information and freedom of expression in approaching various economic, political, social and environmental issues. The UAE has also placed modern information and media at the service of its educational and development plans, including its plans towards the development of its human resources and the promotion of concepts of justice, cooperation and solidarity. Believing in the importance of promoting responsible and free media, the UAE has recently established the Abu Dhabi Free Information Zones in addition to Dubai Media City, which hosts various satellite channels reflecting its cultural and global diversity. The leading role played by the UAE in developing its information and communication technology was valued by the International Federation of Press Clubs which has endorsed the selection of Dubai Press Club as a regional centre.
In continuation of its outward looking policies, the UAE has concluded several information and cultural bilateral agreements and understandings with some programs and institutions of the UN with a view to supporting the exchange of expertise and in order to keep pace with the current international developments. The UAE has also developed its foreign information and communication tools and strengthened its participation in various regional and international conferences, exhibitions, activities and events in order to make the participants in these forums better acquainted with its accomplishments and positions towards issues discussed. The UAE has also hosted numerous delegations, senior officials and experts from various fields including economic, industrial, cultural, information, social and political sectors with a view to benefiting from their diversified experiences and cultures.
