Prosecution summons ranking opposition figure over election funds

SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors said Sunday they have questioned a ranking opposition party official and former lawmaker accused of taking illegal donations ahead of this year's parliamentary election.

Kim Min-seok, a member of the main opposition Democratic Party who lost in the
Aug. 9 election, was summoned Saturday and left the Supreme Prosecutors' Office a
day later after the questioning, the investigators said.
Kim, who ran unsuccessfully against President Lee Myung-bak for Seoul mayor in
2002, is accused of receiving illicit donations worth several hundreds of
millions of won from several businesspeople ahead of the parliamentary election.
The 44-year-old former legislator, a former student activist jailed during the
country's military rule, was a member of the National Assembly from 1996-2002. He
has denied all charges.
