Seoul YMCA marks 105 anniversary

SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- Seoul's Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) marked the 105th anniversary of its foundation on Tuesday, celebrating its accomplishments in improving youth education and social development in the country.

"Seoul YMCA has grown with the Korean people since Japanese colonial rule,
producing many leaders of the nation," said Cho Ki-hung, a director at one of the
nation's leading community service organizations. "We will continue to
concentrate on nurturing future leaders in the spirit of YMCA," he said at the
anniversary ceremony.
The youth organization was founded in 1903 as the nation's first civic group. It
played a leading role in the nation's independence movements against Japanese
colonial rule in the early 20th century and is also credited with introducing
Western sports, including baseball and soccer, to South Korea.
It has since shifted its activities to combating corruption and advocating for
protecting consumer rights and the environment.
