USFK deputy commander to be replaced this week

SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- The deputy commander of U.S. troops stationed in Korea will be replaced this week in a change of command ceremony to be hosted by Gen.

Walter L. Sharp, commander of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), the USFK public affairs
office said Tuesday.
The honor guard ceremony for the outgoing deputy chief of the USFK, Lt. Gen.
Stephen G. Wood, will be held at the main U.S. base in Seoul, known as Yongsan
Garrison, on Friday, the USFK office said.
Maj. Gen. (select) Jefferey A. Remington will replace Wood, who took his South
Korean post two years ago.
As the deputy commander of USFK, Remington will also become the commander of the
air component of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, commander of the
7th U.S. Air Force in Korea and the deputy commander of the United Nations
Command Korea, according to the USFK.
Some 28,500 U.S. services members are currently stationed here as a legacy of the
1950-53 Korean War and providing valuable deterrence against possible aggression
from communist North Korea.
A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Remington entered the service in 1977
and has more than 4,100 flying hours, mostly in the F-15 and F-16 fighter jets,
according to his biography provided by the U.S. Air Force.
His previous commands include the 80th Fighter Squadron in Korea from 1994 to
1995 and the 18th Wing in Japan, and he also worked as a staff at Air Combat
Command headquarters, it said.
The general currently works as the director of operations, plans, requirements
and programs at the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces in Hawaii.
