SEOUL, Oct. 29 (Yonhap) -- The use of Internet banking increased 2 percent in the
third quarter from three months earlier as more people went online for financial
transactions, the central bank said Wednesday.
The number of online banking transactions reached an average of 22.5 million per
day during the July-September period, compared with 22 million in the preceding
three months, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).
At the end of September, 50.7 million individuals and companies had online
banking accounts with 17 local banks, the state-run Korea Post and HSBC Holdings
Plc, up 4.1 percent from the end of June.
Internet banking accounted for 27.1 percent of the total banking transactions in
the cited period while a majority 42.5 percent were carried out through cash
dispensers and automatic teller machines, the BOK said.
South Korea has the world's second-highest Internet penetration rate, with
two-thirds of the country's 50-million population having access to high-speed
Internet.
