S. Korea beats Syria 1-0 in U19 football match
SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Yonhap) -- Kim Young-kwon scored a header in injury time to lift South Korea over Syria 1-0 in the opener of the under-19 Asian Football Confederation championship in Saudi Arabia Saturday, the sport's governing body here said.
The goal by the 18-year-old defender helped put South Korea at the top of Group B
along with the United Arab Emirates, who beat Iraq 2-1 in a separate match, the
Korea Football Association said on its Web site.
South Korea, who seek their first title since 2004, will face the UAE on Sunday
and Iraq just two days later. A berth in the semifinals of the 16-nation
tournament automatically guarantees a ticket to the under-20 World Cup, scheduled
for next year in Egypt.
