Yogyakarta, UNESCO Sign MOU On Cooperation For Persons With Disabilities

Yogyakarta, April 2 (Antara) - The Yogyakarta autonomous region administration and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in social inclusion of people living with disabilities. The MOU was signed by Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti and Director of UNESCO Jakarta Office Hubert Gijzen in a ceremony attended by Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono (HB) X, here Tuesday. "UNESCO will support sharing of experiences among cities and districts in Indonesia on the implementation of policies for people living with disabilities," said Hubert Gijzen. The program is an effort of the United Nations (UN) to disseminate the implementation of UN Convention on the rights of people living with disabilities that has been ratified by the Government of Indonesia in 2011. "UNESCO is committed to train local officials for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities," he said. Yogyakarta has been chosen to launch the programs of social inclusion for persons living with disabilities because the provincial government and the city administration have been committed to the rights of the persons living with disabilities. Local organizations of persons living with disabilities always actively participate in various programs. Haryadi said that the support of UNESCO will be able to accelerate the attainment of the government`s efforts to meet and guarantee the rights of persons living with disabilities. "We hope that the disabled people`s right will be fulfilled and we will try to find the best policy for society to pay attention to a variety of information and advice from various parties," he said.
