Merck to shut down plant in S. Korea
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- U.S. pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. will shut down its plant in South Korea next year as part of its cost-cutting efforts, the company's local unit said Monday.
Merck also plans to lay off some 20 of a total of 40 South Korean workers at the
plant in the city of Ansan, 42 kilometers south of Seoul, said an official at MSD
Korea Ltd.
Closing the facility in South Korea is part of Merck's worldwide efforts to
reduce costs, the official said.
Last month, the New Jersey-based Merck said it would cut 6,800 employees
worldwide after its third-quarter net profit plunged 28 percent from a year
earlier.
