Only 3 out of 10 indicted rapists jailed: report
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- Only about three out of every ten indicted rapists in South Korea received jail terms in 2006, a research paper by a local women's organization showed Monday.
According to the government-funded Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI),
7,942 criminals were indicted on charges of sexual assault in 2006, but a mere
2,285 -- equivalent to 28.8 percent -- were indicted with physical detention.
Although the number of rapists indicted has risen, the rate at which offenders
are detained has dropped significantly. In 1994, the number of sex offenders
detained was 2,945 out of 5,650, equivalent to 52.1 percent.
"While prosecutors claim that more than 90 percent of all sex offenders have been
indicted, the majority of the criminals are indicted without physical detention,"
said the KWDI in the report.
"In order to prevent the recurrence of sexual assault, physical detention is more
meaningful than the indictment itself," it said.
