Seoul residents evacuate for removal of unexploded bomb
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- Hundreds of residents and students in downtown Seoul
were evacuated Monday while military personnel worked to remove an unexploded
bomb apparently dropped during the 1950-53 Korean War, police said.
The police sealed off a 500-meter radius around the construction site of a high
school in the city's Jongno Ward after they were tipped off by a worker at the
site, who found the 500-kilogram bomb while digging in the ground.
Students and residents around the school were evacuated for three hours following
the discovery around 1:15 p.m.
Security officials from the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, located close to
the site, arrived on the scene to be briefed, but the office's officials were
advised not to evacuate.
The bomb is believed to have been dropped by the U.S. military during the war,
the police said.
