PNG Urged To Probe Shooting Of Indonesian National

Jayapura, Papua, May 12 (Antara) - The Papua New Guinean government must thoroughly investigate last Wednesday`s shooting of an Indonesian national by its defense force member, the deputy chief of the Papua provincial legislative body`s commission A, Yanni said. "The investigation is necessary to prevent a recurrence of the accident in the future as well as to maintain the existing good relations between the two countries," he said here on Sunday. It is highly regrettable that the soldier has shot the civilian for whatever reason, he said. Edward Aritahanu was shot when he, along with his father and younger sister was going to visit his relatives at Lido village in the Papua New Guinean Province of Sandaun last Wednesday by a motor boat. The shooting happened when they were at the village`s beach. Edward is being treated at a hospital in the Papua provincial capital of Jayapura.
