Located at one million 566 thousand and 500 square km area in central Asia Mongolia is the world's 17th-largest country after Iran, and is one of the largest countries in the world by area.
From the north to the south Mongolia’s distance ranges 1,259 km, and from the east to the west, it ranges 2,392 km. Mongolia borders with Russia to the north, and with China to the south. The border length is 8158 km.
Mongolia is one of the over 30 landlocked countries. The closest sea to Mongolia is about 1,000 km far, but Mongolia has big lakes and rivers. The country territory lies at 1,580 meters above sea level, and this is higher than the average height of the world’s lands by 700 meters. So, Mongolians called themselves as the people with spirit of the sky.
As the country is located in central part of Asia on higher territories, the weather is high, cold, and dry. It has an extreme continental climate with long, cold winters and short summers, during which most precipitation falls.
Average temperatures over most of the country are below freezing from November through March and are about freezing in April and October. January and February averages of −20 °C are common, with winter nights of −40 °C occurring most years. Sometimes it exceeds -50 C.
The country averages 257 cloudless days a year, and it is usually at the centre of a region of high atmospheric pressure.
Mongolia has about 400 hot and cold spas, about 4,000 species of plants, 15,000 kinds of insects, about 300 amphibians and crawlers, over 80 species of fish, 415 species of birds and 140 species of mammals. Mongolia also has very rare species of animals and plants, and beautiful natural landscapes. Mongolian people have unique custom, tradition and big history, so the number of tourists has been increasing every year.
