Less than 70 percent of S. Koreans enjoy outdoor cultural activities
SEOUL, Nov. 5 (Yonhap) -- Less than seven out of every ten South Koreans enjoyed cultural activities away from home last year, according to a government survey released Wednesday.
According to a biannual survey by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism,
67.3 percent of the South Korean population went out to experience a range of
activities during a 12-month period from March 2007 to February 2008.
It was an increase of 1.5 percent from two years ago.
The survey was conducted among 4,000 people who are fifteen years old or older
from March 3 to April 11 this year. The margin of error measured plus or minus
1.5 percent.
Going to the movies was the most popular cultural activity, with 61.5 percent
which increased from 58.9 percent from two years ago.
The results showed that there was an increase in the overall percentages of the
audience for theaters and musical theaters (8.1 to 11 percent), art exhibitions
(6.8 to 8.4 percent), classical concerts and operas (3.6 to 4.9 percent), and
dance theaters (0.7 to 0.9 percent).
Rates of spectators for traditional Korean art performances stayed the same at
4.4 percent, while rates for literary events and popular music concerts have
decreased from 4.4 to 4 percent and from 10 to 8.2 percent respectively.
The average participation in all the cultural activities has increased from 4.7
to 4.9 times a year.
A majority of South Koreans enjoyed going to movies four times a year, while
least of them went to dance theaters 0.03 time a year.
People visited literary events, classical concerts and opera, and traditional
Korean performances 0.1 time a year, while visiting art exhibitions, theaters and
musical theaters 0.2 time a year.
Cultural activities among people with monthly income from 2 million won
(US$1,579) to 3 million won have increased from 66.3 to 70.5 percent, while
people with monthly income from 1 million to 2 million experienced a decrease
from 54.7 to 48.3 percent.
There was also a drop in activities among people with monthly income less than 1
million won from 23.9 to 19.3 percent.
