Increase in tourist arrivals during global financial tsunami
(KPL) The global financial crisis has no effect whatsoever on the tourist industry in Luang Prabang province and on the contrary the number of visitor arrivals trended upwards, according to a local authority.
The Tourism Office of Luang Prabang province confirmed yesterday that the number of tourist arrivals increased from 250,000 in 2007 to 340,000 for the 10 month-period of this year. The majority are Thai and the rest come from EU, USA and Asia.
Mr Khamtan, Vice-Head of Office of Tourism of Luang Prabang province said that the number of tourist arrivals to Laos would be consistent and this was contrary to the projection by others that the number would decrease because of the financial crisis in the world.
According to his computation the amount of money that the 340,000 visitors spent was US$86 million and compared to the total expenditure for last year it would be an increase of 10.9 per cent. Owing to the upbeat figures the local authorities, he said are planning to increase the number of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants. Last year Luang Prabang Province had 35 hotels and 222 guesthouses.
Miss Da, a receptionist of Manoluck Hotel in Luang Prabang province told KPL news that the number of tourist arrivals to the province is like last year and this is reflected in the number of guests that stay in her hotel, which is 40 per day.
Another receptionist, Mr Somphone of Souvannaphoum Hotel said that that the number of tourists might have increased because many foreign visitors called his hotel to book rooms for the coming high season and presently an average of 25 tourists stay at his hotel each day. .
