No Significant Damage Reported In W Sumatra's Quake
Painan, W Sumatra, June 11 (Antara) - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake that rocked the southern part of West Sumatra`s Pesisir Selatan district on Tuesday morning caused no significant damage to property, a spokesman said.
The quake was strongly felt by people in almost all parts of the district, prompting many of them to rush outdoors, head of the Pesisir Selatan District Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Doni Gusrizal said.
According to the office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Padangpanjang, West Sumatra, the quake which struck at 09.30 a.m. local time was centered 62 km southwest of the district at a depth of 10 km.
No fatalities or injuries were reported.
"We have yet to receive a report of damage or material loss caused by the quake. We have contacted all sub-district heads by mobile phone to ask about the bad impact of the quake," he said.
He said many local residents were carrying out their routine activities when the quake struck the district.
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale devastated the West Sumatra provincial capital of Padang on September 30, 2009, killing at least 1,117 people.
