News Focus: AMROZI ET AL`S EXECUTION STILL MYSTERY By Eliswan Azly

Jakarta, Nov 8 (ANTARA) - The execution of three Bali bombing I convicts on death row - Amrozi, Mukhlas, and Imam Samudra, reported to be carried out on Saturday evening remained a mystery till Saturday afternoon.

A number of journalists seemed to remain roaming near Wijayapura port to wait for report from Nusakambangan, an island where the three Bali bombers are kept in their cells, on their execution, Antara journalist said from Cilacap on Saturday.

"We are still waiting for report on the execution in the sense whether it has been carried out or not," Elly, one of female journalists at port said.

An increase of activity around Nusakambangan penitentiary had been noticeable since 10 a.m. this morning with five state official cars seen crossing into Nusakambangan from mainland Cilacap, tempointeraktif.com reported Saturday morning.

Fully armed police officers were also standing on guard near the Cilacap harbour, which connects to Nusakambangan prison.

Meanwhile, a Puma helicopter had reportedly landed at the nearby Purwokerto Police Academy, while another chopper was parked at the Cilacap Tunggul Wulung Airport.

The National Police previously reported that two helicopters would be used to transport the bodies of the soon-to-be-executed Bali bombers.

"All preparations are ready. The placement of security personnel have been intensified. The execution can be carried out at anytime," Deputy Attorney General Abdul Hakim Ritonga said recently.

In addition, it was also reported that representatives of Amrozi's and Mukhlas' family left Tenggulung village in Lamongan, East Java, for Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, at 2:45 on Saturday morning.

Tenggulun village head Abu Sholeh said the representatives, made up of Amrozi's two wives -- Choiriyana and Rochma --, Mukhlas' two wives -- Paridah from Malaysia and Ana from Solo --, Amrozi's brothers, Ali Fauzi and Sumarno, and Amrozi's daughter who is still in elementary school, Susiana.

Abu Sholeh said they were accompanied by Lamongan High Prosecution Office official Nugroho and Lamongan police official Adjunct Commissioner Sodikin.

According to Abu Sholeh, Lamongan district head Masfuk and his staff Gunadi visited the residence of Muhammad Chozin, a brother of Amrozi, in Tenggulun village last night.

"Pak Masfuk and Gunadi came secretly to Muhammad Chozin's house last night until midnight," Abu Sholeh said, adding that he did not accompany Masfuk and Gunadi during the visit.

Meanwhile, a report from Cilacap, said until Saturday noon, it had remained unclear whether or not the execution of Amrozi, Imam Samudra, and Mukhlas, which according to earlier information was to be carried out on Nusakambangan island early Saturday morning, had taken place.

A number of both domestic and foreign reporters on Saturday afternoon were reported to be still lingering around Cilacap's Wijayapura port while waiting for word from Nusakambangan island about the execution.

Friday evening was earlier thought by many to be the last night of the three death row convicts alive on earth, as their execution could no longer procrastinated.

The reason to arrive at a conclusion that the execution was to be carried out on Friday evening (Nov 7) was based on a statement made by Attorney General Hendarman Supandji who said a week ago that the schedule of their execution was imminent or early in November.

According to Supandji, early in November meant not in the middle of the month. It could be on any date from November 1 to 10. The middle of the month is the 15th. So, it will be before the middle of the month," he said.

Because of his statement, speculations emerged to the surface that the execution could be carried out on early morning of Friday if the days in early in November is counted from November 1 to 10. But the delay of the execution until next Friday evening (Nov 14) if the days in early November are perceived from November 1 to 14.

Due to the government's reluctance to unveil the schedule to the public, then people made their own speculations on the day of the execution of the three Bali bombers.

Friday evening (Nov 7) which is then believed as the last day of the three men is inseparable from a custom prevailing in Indonesia.

It seemed that the public was let in a state of uncertainty to make speculations on the execution, as the existing rules really defined the task of the attorney general's office which was not allowed to tell the public about the date and time of the execution.

"There is a regulation on it. It will be made known to the three men when the right time comes. At that time the three men will be asked if they have something to tell or if they have a will," Supandji said.

In the meantime the lawyers for the bombers said the authorities had not informed them of their clients' execution, which they are obliged to do at least three days before the sentence is carried out.

They were sentenced to death in 2003 for the bomb attacks on packed nightspots in the resort island of Bali which killed 202 people, mainly foreign tourists.

However their execution have been repeatedly delayed by a string of failed appeals and religious considerations. Whether the execution will be carried out tonight (Sunday) is also a mystery. What should the public have to know is that the execution is imminent.
