Islamic Cleric Appeals To Artists To Set Example

Jakarta, July 10 (Antara) - An Islamic cleric has called on artists to set an example by wearing hijabs not only during current fasting month but continuously afterwards. "MUI supports the increasing number of artists wearing hijab," the associate chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI), Ma`ruf Amies, said here on Wednesday. He made the statement in response to increasing number of celebrities wearing hijab at the start of Ramadan. "It is not a problem for them to continue wearing it," he added. He said celebrities as role models must set an example to the public. MUI, he said, would fight for making women to wear hijab but it would not scold those who would not in the effort. He said MUI would monitor television and radio stations to assure their programs are not damaging the holy month of Ramadan. He said this was part of clerics` responsibility in guiding the nation`s morality. He said MUI thanked those stations that broadcast programs that help increase solemnity of the Ramadan.
