Jayapura To Ban Alcoholic Drinks

Sentani, Papua, July 11 (Antara) - The Jayapura regency of Papua will issue a regulation banning strong drinks following recent demonstration against sales of alcoholic drinks in that district. "We positively responded to the people`s demand," Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw said here on Thursday. Thousands of people took to the street in provincial city recently urging the district administration to ban strong drinks. Mathius said the district administration appreciated the people`s demand to ban the sales of strong drinks, which have often triggered public disorder. "The people`s demand needs to be seriously addressed by the district administration and legislative assembly," he said. He pledged the district administration would soon issue the regulation. "Almost all household violence, traffic accidents and other security problems in Jayapura have been attributable to strong drinks," he said. He said the district administration and legislative assembly would support the people`s demand to ban strong drinks in the Jayapura regency.
