UAE calls on the international community to press Israel to stop atrocities

New York - Nov 9, 2008 (WAM) United Arab Emirates has issued a call to the international community to press Israel to stop its atrocities in the Palestinian territories.
In a statement made before the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) on Friday, while discussing the report of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, the member of the UAE delegation Hamad Obeid Ibrahim Al Za'abi also called on the world community to protect the Palestinian people from these atrocities, and take to them the necessary humanitarian help to alleviate their sufferings until a Palestinian state is born.
Za'abi expressed UAE's appreciation for the efforts made by the special committee and its members, revealing to the world the dangers of the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the Syrian Golan Heights.
The 40th report of the committee contained more statistical data and evidence on the inhuman practices and serious human rights violations perpetrated by Israel on a daily basis adopting a systematic methodology of occupation and torture, Al Za'abi noted in his statement.
Despite the continuous ban imposed by Israel since 1968 on visits by human rights committees to the occupied territories, as well as the media blackouts, the grinning truth about the unspeakable sufferings of the Palestinian people continue to emerge to light through such reports, Al Za'abi remarked.
The report brings to light, Israel's policy of besieging Gaza, virtually alienating it from the West bank since 2007. The mass punishment tactics of Israel carried out against the inhabitants of Gaza, cutting of the lifelines to the people of Gaza, are depicted in the report with substantiating evidence.
Israel's policy included cutting off the supply of power, safe drinking water, staple food, healthcare and all other essentials of daily life, thus putting tens of thousands of men, women and children into starvation and diseases; the report revealed.
Apart from these violations of basic human rights, Israel also continues to carry out daily military raids on the Palestinian villages and townships, killing Palestinians, and arbitrarily detaining hundreds of civilians including women and children.
Moreover, Israeli military sets up frequent blockades in Palestinian territories, depriving Palestinians of the freedom of movement. The Israeli forces continue to demolish Palestinian homes, confiscate Palestinian lands and properties, build settlements, and erect the separating wall in the deep of the West Bank and the Holy Jerusalem. This policy has virtually crippled the economic, social and developmental institutions in the Palestinian territories, contributing to a humanitarian catastrophe, which the contemporary history has never witnessed before, the report establishes.
The destruction of Palestine, pushing its people to mental sufferings and material devastation, and depriving the Palestinian generations of the human rights, is the clear violation of all principles and values of humanity. The Israeli practices also tear down all the legitimate resolutions and international conventions including the 4th Geneva Convention and its 33rd article, Al Za'abi noted.
Al Za'abi said that UAE strongly condemns the Israeli atrocities in the Palestinian territories and other Arab lands, and called upon the international community to press Israel to stop these practices.
He also asked the world community to give necessary protection to the Palestinian people until their independent state is established.
Al Zaabi concluded his statement, offering UAE's continued support to the committee and its efforts for bringing into light the Israeli atrocities and human rights violations.
