Gov`t to increase scholarships for working college students
SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Yonhap) -- The government will significantly increase the amount of scholarship funding it provides to working college students as part of its drive to promote job creation for young people, officials said Sunday.
The state will boost funding to 109.5 billion won (US$84.2 million) in 2009 from
8 billion won last year, according to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
Under the scholarship program, a total of 27,000 students at local four-year
colleges are to receive an average of 3 million won per person next year in
return for working at school facilities such as libraries, cafeterias and
administrative offices, ministry officials said.
About 9,000 two-year college students will also receive financial help under the
program, they said. The government and participating schools will share the
scholarship expenses, with the government paying 80 percent.
