President: Parliamentary elections in Turkmenistan should be conducted on alternative basis

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, July 17/ Trend H. Hasanov / Election of deputies of the fifth convocation of Turkmen Majlis (parliament) that is scheduled for December 15, should be conducted on an alternative basis, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said during an extended meeting of Ministers' Cabinet, Turkmen media outlets reported. Turkmenistan's President said that parliamentary election should be carried out on an alternative basis for the election of worthy candidates and people who are highly respected, authoritative and capable of continuing the initiated transformations, Vatan newspaper reported. This appeal was addressed to the Speaker of the Parliament of Turkmenistan Akja Nurberdiyeva and the Chairman of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of Turkmenistan Orazmyrat Nyyazlyev. "It is necessary for you to prepare for this crucial event in the most responsible way," Turkmenistan's President underscored. The office term of Majlis deputies is five years. The main composition of the parliament was elected in December of 2008. According to Turkmenistan's constitution, the parliament adopts laws, makes changes and additions to the fundamental law; approves state budget, solves the issues related to carrying out the national referendums, appoints elections of President, deputies of the Majlis, the members of the representative bodies. The parliament also considers issues about appointment or release from a position of the Supreme Court Chairman, general prosecutor, Interior Minister, Minister of Justice on President's proposal; ratifies and denounces international agreements, addresses the issues of changing of state borders and the administrative-territorial division of the country.
