Lee meets Obama's top aides over N. Korea policy

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Friday
met with top aides of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama in Washington for
discussions on cooperation in the denuclearization of North Korea and the fight
against the global financial crisis, a presidential spokesman said.
Lee arrived here earlier on Friday to attend the Group of 20 financial summit to
be hosted by U.S. President George W. Bush on Saturday for discussions over the
global financial crisis.
According to presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan, President Lee met with former
U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Republican Representative
Jim Leach, both known as top aides for Obama, before attending a welcoming dinner
for the Group of 20 leaders at the White House.
Diplomatic sources in Washington say Obama has decided not to attend the Group of
20 summit and instead sent Albright and Leach as his representatives.
"President Lee met with Albright and Leach for about 30 minutes to exchange views
on various issues of mutual interest, including ways to overcome the global
economic crisis," said spokesman Lee.
"The meeting took place at the request of the Obama camp and we agreed not to
disclose details of their discussions," said the spokesman, refusing to elaborate
further.
Shortly after his arrival here, Lee met separately with a group of foreign and
security policy advisers to Obama under the auspices of the Brookings
Institution.
Obama's advisers detailed the next U.S. administration's foreign and security
policies, including those for the Korean Peninsula, before listening to President
Lee's explanation of his foreign policy directives.
Lee and Obama's advisers also exchanged views on pending North Korea issues, the
long-delayed ratification of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement and realignment
of U.S. forces stationed in South Korea. Meanwhile, the South Korean president
asked for Obama's support for his policy to denuclearize and open North Korea and
raise its per capita income to US$3,000.
