SK Wyverns denied spot in Asian Series final after unexpected defeat
TOKYO, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's SK Wyverns conceded four home runs Saturday to suffer a stunning 4-10 defeat to Taiwan's Uni-President Lions, failing to reach the final of the Asian Series baseball tournament.
The Korea Series champions employed a total of eight pitchers during the match at
the Tokyo Dome, but failed to stop the Lions from mounting an offensive run that
included a pair of three-run homers.
The Wyverns -- who have captured consecutive South Korean titles -- had hoped to
be the first-ever from their country to win the annual series that draws the top
team from each of four Asian countries, including China and Japan.
The tournament, which first began in 2005, kicked off this year in Tokyo on
Thursday, and the Wyverns have won twice and lost once since. But the team
trailed behind Japan's Seibu Lions and China's Tianjin Lions in the number of
runs allowed, failing to win the ticket to the Sunday final.
